Summary

I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone and everyone。 I enjoyed the movie but the book tells a much fuller and clearer story, and caused me to see things I couldn't see before。 I found it to be a fast read because the personal stories are so compelling and well told。 Also the book highlights a lot of topics I think are important, like the increasing wealth gap, our consumer culture, and the corporate shift toward employees as disposable cogs rather than valued assets。 I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone and everyone。 I enjoyed the movie but the book tells a much fuller and clearer story, and caused me to see things I couldn't see before。 I found it to be a fast read because the personal stories are so compelling and well told。 Also the book highlights a lot of topics I think are important, like the increasing wealth gap, our consumer culture, and the corporate shift toward employees as disposable cogs rather than valued assets。 。。。more

Amazing documentation of nomadic van life。 I became fascinated by this subject back in 2017 after returning from a cross-country trip of the U。S。, thinking how much money I might have saved had I slept in my vehicle。 Little did I know how many people did this permanently。 I stumbled upon a few, and then a few hundred, people on YouTube who vlogged their lives living full-time in their vehicles。 I was really excited to read this book to hear more about the lives of these folks。 There are so many Amazing documentation of nomadic van life。 I became fascinated by this subject back in 2017 after returning from a cross-country trip of the U。S。, thinking how much money I might have saved had I slept in my vehicle。 Little did I know how many people did this permanently。 I stumbled upon a few, and then a few hundred, people on YouTube who vlogged their lives living full-time in their vehicles。 I was really excited to read this book to hear more about the lives of these folks。 There are so many reasons why they live the way they do, not the least of which is how difficult it is to exist in a world where wages stay low and the cost of housing continues to rise。 This book is a testament to the human spirit, and while some stories include sadness, the author does a great job of sharing the true width and breadth of a person's life & condition for each subject she interviews。 。。。more

Mixed feelings about the book。 Much of what the author seemed to imply were unique characteristics of these nomads apply to most people of retirement age。 Yes, there are those who have saved for and will live out their retirement without wanting for money and family, but that is not the norm, whether you are houseless or not。 Still, I appreciate the book because it is a story that needed to be told and was obviously well-researched。

4 to 4。5 stars, "Nomadland" is an important story and author Jessica Bruder tells it well。 This is a story about older people in the U。S。 who all their lives have played by the rules but have been shafted by our cut-throat economic realities。 So these folks have drastically trim their living conditions to the bare-bones。 The folks documented in "Nomadland" invariably state that they prefer their bare-bones lifestyle。 But none of them made these changes out of choice - they all were forced into i 4 to 4。5 stars, "Nomadland" is an important story and author Jessica Bruder tells it well。 This is a story about older people in the U。S。 who all their lives have played by the rules but have been shafted by our cut-throat economic realities。 So these folks have drastically trim their living conditions to the bare-bones。 The folks documented in "Nomadland" invariably state that they prefer their bare-bones lifestyle。 But none of them made these changes out of choice - they all were forced into it。 No other wealthy nation in the world treats their seniors so harshly as we do。 And no other wealthy country in the world is experiencing such gross income inequality as the U。S。 This is inexcusable。 I recommend "Nomadland" by Jessica Bruder。 。。。more

Interesting but slow。 And felt really outdated now that wages are at an all time high for jobs with no experience and/or manual labor。

A new subculture is emerging in America - the marginalized working poor - unable to afford permanent housing, they live in cars, vans and RVs and travel to fill seasonal jobs。 These migrant workers for the new millennium (workampers) are typically older, white, and unable to survive on their social security benefits。 Jessica Bruder examines their plight, resilience and community through extensive interviews conducted as she lived among them in her own vandwelling。

Petra Hegger

Well-researched and written but pretty thoroughly depressing。 I admired the resourcefulness of the nomads, but it didn’t seem like any of them had many good choices。 It does show how our social safety net has failed, and how many of us may be one unfortunate circumstance or one bad decision away from disaster。 Imagine being sixty years old and cheap labor fodder for Amazon! I did like the movie, but then I’m a fan of Frances McDormand。

This is an important book, and a real eye opener。 I had no idea who the people are who work 24-7 in the Amazon warehouses across the country, and in the remote State Parks and various seasonal sports venues。 They are older retired Americans, living in trailers, RV's, in low cost campgrounds, or by the side of the road。 During their younger working years, they didn't make enough for a 401K or savings, and never owned their own homes。 So, they have to continue to work at minimum wage or low paying This is an important book, and a real eye opener。 I had no idea who the people are who work 24-7 in the Amazon warehouses across the country, and in the remote State Parks and various seasonal sports venues。 They are older retired Americans, living in trailers, RV's, in low cost campgrounds, or by the side of the road。 During their younger working years, they didn't make enough for a 401K or savings, and never owned their own homes。 So, they have to continue to work at minimum wage or low paying jobs, for as long as they possibly can, because they have no other option。 This book was made into a movie by the same name。 I haven't seen it yet, but Francis McDormand, won the Best Actress Oscar, so I know it must be very good。 I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a true story about what life is like for a segment of the American population, that you knew nothing about。 It could be you, in the future! 。。。more

Very interesting topic。 I liked the movie better than the book in this case! The visual of seeing these modified vans people call home was so interesting。

The future is looking bleak for old Americans。 In hindsight, the movie was plenty, reading this didn’t add much and parts of it were quite boring writing。

Hmmm, this book was for sure interesting, but harder for me to get into。 Fascinating in the sense of alternate lifestyles! Kind of made me want to renovate a van!

I loved the movie (which I saw first), however I found the book book amazing。 The book is a glimpse into a world I didn’t know existed。 I found the stories to be inspiring, disturbing, sad and sometimes a little funny。 I enjoyed the writing and after finishing reading the book I found myself searching the internet trying to find out what happened to a few of the main characters that populate the book。 Well worth reading。

A compelling story about Linda May (no relation) who pursues her own dream against the stark reality of the “poverty chasm” Bruder describes。 While the nomads and van dwellers she followed had to find ways to survive after the Great Recession of 2008, I’m curious to know what the impact of 2020 and the pandemic has had on these same people。

Not what I thought it was going to be: these are the people who have either lost pretty much everything and are traveling itinerant farm, Amazon or campground workers who are trying to make the best of the rest of their lives as they adjust to being 'houseless'; these people have fallen through the cracks of society, yet we rely on them to provide the labor for much of what we covet in our society。 Not what I thought it was going to be: these are the people who have either lost pretty much everything and are traveling itinerant farm, Amazon or campground workers who are trying to make the best of the rest of their lives as they adjust to being 'houseless'; these people have fallen through the cracks of society, yet we rely on them to provide the labor for much of what we covet in our society。 。。。more
